Farewell to Vice-Prefect Du
The city walls guard the land of Three Qin; through wind and mist I gaze toward Five Fords.
As we part with heavy hearts, we are both wanderers in service of the state.
While a true friend exists within the four seas, the furthest horizon feels as close as next door.
Let us not, at this crossroads, weep like lovesick youths.
In the Tang Dynasty, farewell poems were typically drenched in sorrow. Wang Bo broke the mold—he says, stop crying! As long as our friendship endures, what does the size of the world matter? 'While a true friend exists within the four seas, the furthest horizon feels as close as next door'—this line could be a motto tailor-made for the internet age. Over 1,300 years ago, Wang Bo already understood a modern truth: real connection doesn't depend on physical distance, but on the resonance between souls.
